Use Hashtags to Promote Your Writing

Are you frustrated with Twitter? You’re linked into an audience of millions, yet no one notices your tweets. That’s because you need to utilize hashtags. It’s what makes Twitter unique. There are no set rules for hashtags. People make them up all the time. There are, however, some popular ones that folks use to promote their writing.

What a hashtag does is create a searchable word in the Twitter universe. Say you want people to know that your tweet is about a book. Just put a number symbol in front, like this— #book — and anyone searching for that word or hashtag will find your tweet.

Here are some hashtags writers might use to help promote their books.

General Publishing
#mg
#YA
#fiction
#nonfiction
#publishing
#book

Selling eBooks
#free
#kindle
#read
#ebook

Genres
#western
#horror
#occult
#fantasy
#scifi
#action
#humor
#romance
#paranormal
#truecrime
#thriller
#hardboiled
#police
#crimewriting
#mystery
#historical
#memoir
#essays

You can combine hashtags to reach more people. For example, you could write: #hardboiled #thriller #free #kindle. Also, feel free to slip the hashtag into your actual tweet. (You only have 140 characters after all). For example: Check out my new #thriller about a #police officer who solves #crimes.
